Suffolk University students and alumni received notice this week that a "cybersecurity incident" which took place over the Summer included the obtaining of personal identifying information.
"We determined on November 14, 2022 that certain of your personal information was impacted as a result of the incident," said the letter sent to those affected by the breach.
Attacks on colleges and universities have surged according to a report released over the summer by global cybersecurity corporation Sophos, with "nearly three-quarters of ransomware attacks on higher ed institutions" succeeding, according to InsideHigherEd.com.
Suffolk University President Marisa Kelly urged students to monitor their bank accounts while stressing that there was "no evidence that the data was used maliciously," according to the Suffolk Journal.
"To date, we are not aware of any reports of identity fraud, or of any dissemination or improper use of your information as a result of this incident," the letter stated.
A call center has been set up for the students and alumni affected. "Suffolk University prioritizes the privacy and security of all our students, faculty, staff, and alumni. We take our responsibility to safeguard data with which we are entrusted very seriously," University President Marisa Kelly said.
