PowerSchool Data Breach Exposes Sensitive Information of over 18,000 in Massachusetts

An educational vendor whose technology is integrated into numerous public schools in the state of Massachusetts has suffered a data breach that affected 18,476 Massachusetts residents, with some students, families, and staff having their social security numbers and medical records exposed. 

Powerschool, a student information database, is used worldwide by over 55 million students.  

On December 28, 2024, PowerSchool suffered a cybersecurity incident involving unauthorized access to certain information through one of their community-focused customer portals.  

According to an e-mail sent to families, “As soon as we learned of the potential incident, we immediately engaged our cybersecurity response protocols and mobilized a cross-functional response team, including senior leadership and third-party cybersecurity experts. We have also informed law enforcement.” 

During the investigation, it was found that a set of credentials for the system had been put up for sale on the dark web preceding the attack.  

School systems hold enormous amounts of confidential data about our nation’s students. There is a duty to protect this information, and school systems need to take that seriously.  

The breach highlights the critical need for robust cybersecurity measures in educational institutions. As schools increasingly rely on digital platforms to manage student information, they must develop policies and defenses to act against threats. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the vulnerabilities that exist and the importance of proactive measures to prevent future breaches.
