"Affected systems were taken offline immediately, and proactive steps were taken to isolate the problem and shutdown network communication," the library said in a statement on their website. "There is currently no evidence that sensitive employee or patron data has been disclosed."
While most of their systems were knocked offline, the library remained open for all those who wished to check out books. By the first of September, key systems were back online.
Boston Public Library is the third-largest in the country after the Library of Congress and New York.
"Thank you for your patience as our team and law enforcement officials work to restore our digital services and protect the library from future attacks," said Kurt Mansperger, Chief Technology Officer of the Boston Public Library.
